The FGF19 subfamily composed of FGF15/19, FGF21 and FGF23 binds the FGF receptors co-joined by α- or β-Klotho and it is characterized as a factor group which has hormonal functions. The novel system consisted of α/βKlotho and FGF19 subfamily regulates integrally metabolism of minerals, lipids, energy and amino acids. This novel regulating system involves important homeostatic mechanisms in the body such as bile acid and cholesterol metabolism in the liver (through FGF19), energy and glycolipids metabolism (through FGF21) and phosphate, calcium and vitamin D metabolism in kidney (through FGF23) in fasting state. FGF19 is secreted in the ileum (small intestine) and transported to the liver through the bloodstream. It suppresses the synthesis of bile acid in liver with effects on glucose and lipid metabolism. FGF19 binds a receptor unit consisting of FGFR4 and β-Klotho. Levels of FGF19 are studied in relation to digestive disorders such as diarrhea and constipation which might be related to FGF19 hormonal abnormality and metabolic disorders such as diabetes. Lower levels of FGF19 are found in chronic diarrhea patients, but also metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and insulin resistance. FGF19 is often also measured in quiescent Crohn's colitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, anorexia nervosa and type 2 diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome. This kit measures human FGF19 in .
