Bone and Mineral Metabolism

The cells responsible for bone metabolism are osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts are responsible for bone formation. Osteoclasts degrade bone to initiate normal bone remodeling and mediate bone loss in pathologic conditions by increasing their resorptive activity. Vitamin D is an important co-factor in bone and mineral metabolism and it is therefore vital to measure Vitamin D deficiency. IBL International offers assays for 25-OH-Vitamin D, Calcitonin and Parathormone (PTH), among others.
